Practice the “Name It, Tame It” Technique

When your mind starts to swirl with thoughts, don’t try to wrestle them to the ground. Just give them a name. If you’re feeling anxious, say “This is anxiety.” If your shoulders are tight and your breath is shallow, say “This is stress.” You’re not labeling yourself — you’re labeling a moment.

Why? Because naming an emotion can shrink its intensity. Neuroscientists call it “affect labeling,” but we just call it a power move in heels. It gives you a beat to respond rather than react. Over time, this gentle habit helps you make space between stimulus and response — and that’s where your best decisions live.

Try it next time your to-do list mutates into a monster. You might just find a little more calm hiding in the chaos.
