I find this quote striking because it captures how anxiety can become overwhelming, not just for the person experiencing it, but also for those around them. When I’m anxious, I sometimes cling to others for reassurance or support, yet that same desperation can push them away or leave them feeling drained. It’s a sobering reminder to keep my own anxiety in check, so it doesn’t harm the relationships I value most.

But there’s hope here too. Knowing that anxiety can drown out love motivates me to practice mindfulness. When I’m aware of my own spiraling worries, I take a step back, breathe, and remember that I have the power to pause the panic. In choosing to center myself, I protect not just my own peace of mind, but also the health and warmth of my connections with others.

Create a Self-Check Moment

Whenever I notice anxiety creeping in, I pause everything for a brief self-check. I close my eyes, inhale for four counts, hold for two, and exhale for four. Then I ask, “How am I feeling right now?” That tiny act of self-awareness often makes the difference between panicking and taking calm, focused action.

I’ve found that consistently practicing this mindful pause reduces the chance of overwhelm. It’s like a life jacket in stormy seas—a quick, vital tool that helps me regain a sense of balance before anxiety pulls me under.
